Acne is a skin condition that affects millions of people each year, so removing acne scars is so important. Depending on the severity of the acne you may be left with acne scars long after the acne is gone. There are many different ways of removing acne scars. But which methods really work for removing acne scars?
Most dermatologists will tell you that in order to start removing acne scars it is best to first be rid of the underlying acne condition. There are many methods of removing acne scars.
Dermabrasion
Dermabrasion is a treatment method that removes the top or upper layers of skin. This leaves a smooth layer of skin which is much firmer and has fewer wrinkles. Dermabrasion and microdermabrasion uses tiny crystals to remove dead skin cells. The treatments are available in the doctor's office or at a spa and can be very costly. The treatments need to be repeated every several weeks to continue to see good results. It works best for mild to moderately acne-damaged skin. The treatments do cause redness and irritation, which go away after a day or two. Be sure to avoid sunlight after these treatments because even mild exposure can cause skin irritation.
Laser Treatment
Laser treatment for removing acne scars uses light therapy to remove tiny sections of skin. This allows the skin to grow back normally. Laser treatments can be expensive and may not be covered by insurance benefits. Laser treatment works well on certain types of acne scars. Consult with a dermatologist who can determine if laser treatments will be helpful in your case.
Chemical Peels
Similar to dermabrasion, chemical peels are used to remove the top layers of skin to reveal softer, clearer skin. The treatment can remove the signs of minor acne scars which have not penetrated into deep skin layers.
Injections
Injections can be used to help fill in acne scar areas such as indentations left from deep acne. Typically collagen is used for the injections. They last for several months or more but do need to be repeated.
Skin Grafts
For serious acne scars skin grafts may be the only way to go. This involves surgery and a painful recovery period. Often the skin that is used is taken from the upper thigh. This method is for severe acne scars only. The skin will never look new but with time this method will show less acne scarring.
